Creating, reviewing and restructuring a text can now be a shared task with artificial intelligence, all inside Google Docs. The integration between Gemini and Google documents allows you to generate content, edit specific sections and even chat with the AI to adjust whatever is needed. I tested in practice what the tool can already do and what the current limits of this partnership look like.
Generating a document with Gemini inside Google Docs
When you open a new file in Google Docs, anyone who has access to Gemini is greeted by three interactive buttons at the top of the page. “Generate document”, “I want help writing” and “More”. The first one is the starting point for anyone who wants to create something from scratch with support from Google’s artificial intelligence.
After clicking “Generate document”, the system displays a window with ready made structured suggestions. There are templates like product scripts, launch plans and newsletters. These examples serve as a starting point, but you can ignore them and type directly the kind of content you want to produce.
At the bottom of this window, there is a field where you type what you want to create. That was where, for this test, I requested a Christmas dinner menu with variety. Dishes with meat and vegan options, alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks and desserts with and without sugar.

The answer came fully structured. On the left side of the document, Gemini organized everything into sections following the criteria provided. You can navigate easily through categories such as “Main dishes”, “Sides”, “Drinks” and “Desserts”.
If the cover image suggested by the AI is not what you want, you can click on it to open the available options. You can upload your own image, choose a new one from Google’s library or even ask the AI to generate a new illustration from scratch.
Getting help with writing
When you click the option “I want help writing”, a field appears for you to type what you need. In this test, I asked for a blog article about the benefits of Bitcoin for countries in the Global South.
After typing the request and selecting “Create”, Gemini presents a full draft with a title, an introduction and developed paragraphs.

The content appears inside a highlighted bubble with three choices. You can insert the text into the document, request a new version with changes or type a direct refinement command.
You can review it, adjust the content to match your own style or use only the parts you want. When you click “Insert”, the text appears inside the document, where you can continue editing it freely just as you would with any manually written content.
Refining text with custom commands
Beyond creating content from scratch, Gemini in Google Docs also works well for improving text that is already written. When a user selects a passage or opens the AI panel, the tool offers the option to generate a new version of that content.
Once the request is made, Gemini produces a revised draft focused on clarity, flow and tone. In the test, the first suggestion came with a lighter and more casual style. If that is not the direction the writer wants, it is possible to guide the AI by specifying the type of adjustment needed.
The tool provides a field for custom instructions where the user can describe exactly what kind of change they expect. This can include making the text sound more journalistic, more technical, more formal, more direct or more suitable for a specific audience.
After receiving this guidance, Gemini rewrites the passage according to the requested style. If the result matches what the writer had in mind, the new version can replace the original and the document can be edited normally from there.
This feature is helpful for anyone who wants to speed up revisions, maintain a consistent voice or adapt content for different contexts without having to rewrite everything manually.
💎 Using Gems for creative and customized tasks
Inside the Gemini panel in Google Docs there is an area called “Gems”. These resources work like themed assistants designed for specific needs, offering quick and focused suggestions for anyone who wants to create, revise or structure ideas with more agility.
The main options available today are:
✏️ Text Editor
This Gem is useful for anyone who already has a draft and wants to improve the quality of the writing. It suggests clarity fixes, grammar improvements and even rewrites aligned with a chosen style. You can ask for a more formal tone, a more direct approach or an adaptation to a specific editorial guide.
The preset suggestions cover tasks such as correcting mistakes, making sentences clearer or improving fluency and word choice.
💡 Idea Generation
This Gem helps when creativity feels stuck or when you need to explore new possibilities. It offers ideas for presentations, events, campaigns and products. It also gives guidance for planning brainstorming sessions in a team setting.
The available commands include suggestions for icebreakers, ways to introduce key concepts or ideas for promotional activities.
📝 Content Creation
This Gem supports communication and marketing tasks. It can generate slogans, mission statements, campaigns and branded content that can be used across different platforms. It works well when you need multiple versions of the same message quickly.
There are prompts for creating slogans, structuring campaigns or adapting content for social media.
All Gems work interactively. The user can click on a preset suggestion or type a custom command. The generated content appears in the side panel, ready to be copied, added to the document or refined according to the context.
Is Gemini in Google Docs worth using?
The integration is not ready to replace a skilled human writer, although it already helps speed up repetitive tasks. If you need quick drafts, idea testing or small revisions, the AI can be useful as long as you know what to request and how to refine the result afterward.
In the end, Gemini works like an assistant inside Docs. And like any assistant, it performs better when it receives clear instructions and works with you rather than in your place.
⚠️ One important detail
These features only appear in Google Docs for users who subscribe to one of the Gemini plans. The most affordable option already unlocks all writing tools. With Gemini Pro, priced at nineteen ninety-nine dollars per month in the United States, you can use the full set of writing features directly inside Docs.
